Is a B.Des in Industrial Design a good course?

 

Design courses are becoming increasingly popular among students in India. There has been a slight change in the engineering, business, and medical mindset and now students are looking at other options such as Design. There are many Industrial Design courses in India offered by top institutes such as NID and SID. Doing a Bachelor’s course in Industrial Design is an excellent idea as it gives you a good start in the world of design. You can, later on, specialize in a more refined subject.

 

Course Overview

 

This course will give you a comprehensive introduction to the world of design. It will focus on areas such as sketching, fluid flow, computer-aided design, materials, etc. Students will get an idea of the design lifecycle of a product, right from thinking of an idea to prototyping it and then finally manufacturing and commercializing the product.

 

The course will work on improving your hand skills, creativity, visualization skills, and digital skills. It will also teach you concepts of engineering and business studies.

 

It is a 4-year undergraduate course with an internship year involved.

 

How to apply

 

Everyone is eligible for a B.Des course regardless of the subjects chosen in 12 grade. There are various examinations conducted by each college for its own admission process. Some colleges accept students on the basis of merit, i.e. a good portfolio along with a personal statement. Some of the popular B.Des entrance examinations are NID DAT, SET, UID NSEIT, NIFT entrance exam, etc.

 

Along with the examination, you must also prepare a good portfolio for the private interview which will be conducted after you pass the examination round. This portfolio should contain your best work and should cover a broad range of mediums such as paint, pastel, pencil sketches, computer-aided designs, 3D objects, perspective drawings, human figures, etc. 

 

Preparing for the examination is key. The syllabus includes basic sketching skills, perspective drawing, 3D objects, etc. The purpose of the exam is not to test your drawing skills but to test your creative thinking and proclivity towards design studies. Questions based on English, General Knowledge, and Analytical Thinking are also asked.

 

Salary and Job Prospects

 

The average salary of a B.Des graduate ranges between 2-6 LPA. After graduating, one can opt for degrees such as MTech in Product Design or MBA to increase your potential and salary package.
